cheryl the potter...among other things
Coming from a family of creative people who engage in a variety of different artistic pursuits, I don't think anyone who knows me was very surprised when I finally signed up for my first pottery class. I was curious about ceramics and pottery as a child and as an adult, any museum visit would leave me wondering what it must be like to create vessels with your own two hands.
Originally from Philadelphia, PA, I migrated to Austin, TX in 2005. Under the tutelage of some of the most impressive ceramists in Texas, I practice my skills on the wheel at a local student pottery studio here in Austin, working with light bodied high-fire clay.
I love playing with texture and carving; glazing is sometimes more of a chore than a pleasure that I hope I master when I begin mixing my own glazes. My favorite glaze to date is spodumene (featured in my logo) and I always lean toward warm, earth tones unless clients and friends request otherwise.
While I enjoy creating functional pieces like bowls and mugs, I find my biggest enjoyment in developing pieces that step a bit outside of function and practice. Most of the work featured in my portfolio is fired to cone 10 and is usually food-safe unless otherwise indicated.
So what else is there to tell? Let's see...I'm left-handed and notoriously right-brained, I'm a fierce defender of the heart, Am Staff terriers and moments of spiritual solitude. I'm a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, a sports nut, a lover, a feeler, a thinker and sometimes, a healer.
