Something a friend said to me this morning that really put emotional reaction in a much different perspective, at least for me:
[With regard to a potentially 'charged' situation..] Ask yourself, "How much does this really matter, compared to what's important to me?"
For some reason, that hit me like a brick between the eyes. As someone who can get really worked up over any grievance, this potentially changes the game for me. If I can take enough time to process that thought, seriously. I can probably avoid saying or doing things as an immediate reaction to a negative emotion. Especially when you consider that at this point in our modernized society, we are still unable to go back and time and change anything.
